Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 1, 2026

Available Company Limited ("we", "us", "our") operates the Furigana Reader mobile application (the "App"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information.

1. Information We Collect

Account Information (Optional)

You can use the App without an account. If you choose to sign in with Apple or Google, we receive your account's user ID, email address and display name. With Sign in with Apple you can hide your email address, and we then receive a private relay address from Apple instead. Your account is used for cloud sync and to keep a subscription with you across devices.

Photos You Scan

When you scan, the App reads the photo on your device: with Apple's Live Text on iOS and Google's ML Kit text recognition on Android, and with the dictionary built into the App for the readings and meanings. The photo and its text stay on your device: a copy of each photo is kept with its scan. Photos are never uploaded to our cloud database.

AI Explain

Only when you tap AI Explain on a scan is the photo of that scan sent to Google's Gemini API through Firebase AI Logic, which returns a translation, the meanings of the words in context, grammar notes and where each line is on the photo. We currently use the Gemini API's no-cost tier. Under Google's terms for that tier, Google may use the photos and results it receives to provide, improve and develop Google products, and human reviewers may read them after they are disconnected from our account. Please do not explain photos of documents with personal or sensitive information, such as ID cards, medical or financial papers, or other people's details.

The App asks for your permission before it sends the first photo, and you can withdraw it at any time on the App's Privacy Policy screen. AI Explain is not offered in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the United Kingdom.

Read Aloud

Words and lines are read aloud on your device, by its own text-to-speech voices. The App does not send the text anywhere.

Scans, Vocabulary and Review Progress

Your scan results (the recognized text, readings, romaji, meanings, translations and word list), saved words, notes, folders and flashcard (SRS) review history are stored on your device. If you have a Pro subscription and are signed in, they are also stored in our cloud database (Google Cloud Firestore), so you can restore them on another device. Photos and App settings are not stored in the cloud.

Usage Data

We use Google Analytics for Firebase to understand how the App is used and where it falls short. It records the screens you view and which features you use, such as scanning, AI Explain, the reading layers, read aloud, saving words, review and export. It records how scans perform and why they fail, as counts and simple facts: how many lines and words were found, how long the scan took, which on-device reader read it, whether the photo was cropped or came from the camera or your library, and a reason such as no text found. Review sessions are recorded as counts (the cards reviewed and how you rated them), and so are changes to your settings and how you signed in (Apple or Google). Your plan, theme and display settings, your answer to the AI Explain permission, and whether your store country is in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland are kept as properties of your app instance. None of this includes what you scan or save: no photos, no Japanese text, no words, meanings, translations, notes or folder names. This data is tied to a random app-instance identifier and to an approximate location that Google derives from your IP address, not to your name or email. Versions before 2.0 also sent the saved word itself. We do not use a crash reporting service.

Purchases

Subscriptions are sold by Apple or Google and managed through RevenueCat. RevenueCat receives your purchase history and an app user ID, which is a random ID, or your account's user ID while you are signed in. We never see your payment details.

Ads (Free Plan)

The free plan shows a banner ad and offers an optional rewarded video, both served by Google AdMob. AdMob may collect device identifiers, an approximate location and how you interact with ads. On iOS, ads are personalized only if you allow tracking when the App asks; otherwise they are not personalized. In the EEA and the UK, you choose through Google's consent form, which you can reopen on the App's Privacy Policy screen. We also send each ad's format, placement, ad unit, network and earnings to RevenueCat, so we can see ad income next to subscriptions; this never includes anything you scan. Plus and Pro subscribers see no ads.

Security and Settings

To protect AI Explain from abuse, the App uses Firebase App Check, which asks Apple (App Attest) or Google (Play Integrity) to confirm that requests come from a genuine copy of the App. The App also loads settings we control remotely, such as which AI model AI Explain uses and the daily limits of each plan, through Firebase Remote Config.

2. Third-Party Services

The App uses the following third-party services:

3. Local-First Architecture

Furigana Reader is local-first. Scans are read on your device, and your scans, vocabulary, notes and review progress live on your device and stay usable without an internet connection; only AI Explain and cloud sync need one. Cloud sync is optional and only for signed-in Pro subscribers. On Android, the system may include the App's data in your Google device backup.

The dictionary built into the App, which gives the readings and meanings of a scan, is JMdict, the property of the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group, used in conformance with the Group's licence (CC BY-SA 4.0). It works on your device and sends nothing.

4. Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with the services listed above, as needed to run the App. If you allow tracking on iOS, or agree to personalized ads in the EEA or the UK, AdMob may use your device's advertising identifier to personalize ads.

5. Data Retention

Data on your device stays there until you delete it or uninstall the App. Data in our cloud database stays until you delete your account. From version 2.0 you can delete your account in the App (Delete account, on the account screen), which removes your cloud data and your sign-in; you can also ask us through our Account Deletion page. Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription; cancel that in your App Store or Google Play settings. Photos sent with AI Explain are kept by Google under the Gemini API terms above, and analytics data under Google Analytics' retention settings.

6. Children's Privacy

The App is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected information from a child under 13, we will delete it promptly.

7. Your Rights

You have the right to:

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes through the App or by updating the "Last updated" date above.
